If you have (and maintain) auto insurance on your vehicle (that was
damaged or destroyed in the accident), then your auto insurance
coverage will probably transfer over to your rental vehicle
automatically for the brief period that you are in the rental vehicle
(because a rental vehicle is a "replacement vehicle" on most insurance
policies). But, notify your auto insurance agent (from whom you bought
your auto insurance for your own car) that you plan to rent a vehicle
anyway, and ask your auto insurance agent to transfer your existing
auto insurance over to your rental vehicle before you drive the
rental vehicle (just to be safe). Beware. If you only have "required
(basic) coverage" on your vehicle that was involved in the accident,
and if that auto insurance is transferred over to the rental vehicle,
then you will still only have "required (basic) coverage" on your
rental vehicle. So, if you are in an accident while you are driving
the rental vehicle, and you have only "required (basic) coverage" (junk
insurance) on your vehicle that was in the accident, you might be held personally
responsible to pay for damages, including damage to the rental car
itself, or for injuries to other people. But, no matter what kind of
auto insurance you have on your own vehicle, the vehicle rental agency
will still try to sell you even more auto insurance anyway (at an
inflated price), even though they know that your own auto insurance
(with all its limitations and deficiencies) may transfer over to the
rental vehicle for a brief period. But, beware. No auto insurance
company (yours or the one on the other side) will reimburse you for any
extra ("add-on") auto insurance that you choose to buy from any vehicle
rental agency no matter what. For this reason, we recommend that
if you need more auto insurance (and you might), you buy if from your
own auto insurance agent before you obtain a rental vehicle (so
you pay much less for it and so you keep it on your own vehicle after
the rental period is over).
